Nello Ferrara, the son of Ferrara Pan’s founder, invented Atomic Fireballs in 1954. The candy’s spicy flavour and extraordinarily long shelf life made it an instant hit. Like many other Ferrara sweets, Atomic Fireballs are made by hot panning, where on a single sugar grain core, layers of sugar syrup and flavour are placed.
Even though they’re made with cinnamon, which is a strong-flavoured spice, the ingredient that makes Atomic FireBalls so spicy is capsaicin, the chemical that makes chillies so hot.
